Scottish Greens back calls for ceasefire in Gaza and support for displaced people
The Scottish Greens have backed growing international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Responding to a statement by the First Minister, Humza Yousaf, Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay also supported calls from the Scottish Government for safe corridors for medical aid and displaced people.
Speaking in the Chamber Ms Mackay said:
“I thank the First Minister for his heartfelt words and his moral leadership and his bravery over the last two weeks at a time of unimaginable personal strain.
“I wish to associate the Green Group with what he has said on the brutality of the Hamas attacks on 7 October and the taking and holding of hostages, on the need for Israel to adhere to international law and to cease the collective punishment of innocent people and families in Gaza, and on the need for immediate actions from ceasefire to the protection of humanitarian corridors and aid access.
“Here in Scotland he has our support for our country’s role in supporting people displaced and scarred by conflict and in ensuring that affected communities continue to see Scotland as a welcoming country.
“We need to see the end of the tragedy of escalating cycles of violence, so does the First Minister join with me in recognising that a negotiated agreement which respects the right of both peoples to safety and security in their homeland has never been more urgent?”
