Safety of all civilians in Gaza must be paramount

The need for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of a humanitarian corridor has never been more urgent

News that the First Minister Humza Yousaf’s family has reached safety has been welcomed with relief by Patrick Harvie MSP.

Humza Yousaf’s parents in law, Elizabeth and Maged El-Nakla, had been trapped in Gaza since the attacks of 7 October as the situation rapidly deteriorated.

Mr Harvie said:

“I’m relieved to hear that the First Minister’s relatives have now left Gaza. It’s difficult to comprehend what they must have gone through over the last 4 weeks, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who made their return to safety possible. I wish them well in their recovery.

“There are still 2.3 million civilians trapped in Gaza, half of them children. Every single one of their lives has value. They are all somebody’s parents, somebody’s children, somebody’s brother or sister.

“The need for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of a humanitarian corridor to deliver desperately needed aid is now more urgent than ever. Everything possible must be done by the UK and the international community to keep all civilians safe, whether they call home.”
