Help stop young people becoming smokers

We must take action to discourage young people from smoking

Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay has welcomed the launch of a joint Scottish and UK government consultation geared to sparking a future smoke free generation.

After winning cross-party support in Holyrood for a ban on single use vapes, followed by a commitment by Scottish Government Minister Lorna Slater to consult on a ban, Ms Mackay said it was important for people to speak up now.

Ms Mackay said:

“The fact both governments are working together on the best way forward to not only take single use vapes out of the hands of our children, but to end the scourge of smoking once and for all, shows just how serious this crisis is.

“I would ask every parent, every health professional, every expert and all those who have worked with me over this issue to take part and complete this consultation as quickly as possible and encourage others to do the same.

“This is the moment that we can make history and transform the health of our nation and to protect our environment in a way that will have long lasting benefits in every city, town and village across the country.

“Supermarkets and other retailers don’t need to wait for a consultation. They can take action now to pull these products from their shelves, to do the right thing as we have been calling for, and to act responsibly.

“That cannot be taken for chance though, which is why I would implore everyone to have their say in this massively important consultation.”
